The Rega R5 is an exceptional loudspeaker. Using a dynamic three driver set up it offers extraordinary accurate low frequency and very even, and extended high quality treble performance, producing an extremely versatile, dynamic and musical sound.
Drive units
The R5 loudspeaker uses Rega's classic RR125 midrange drive unit. This offers excellent damping of cone resonances, resulting in a smooth midrange response. The R5 also benefits from a new single side firing 7inch driver, which utilises a 6 layer voice coil in aluminium rather than copper. This allows Rega to eradicate any crossover filters for this driver giving the bass seamless integration with the mid range unit and exceptional timing without compromising any of the midrange and treble performance which Rega is renowned for. The R5 loudspeakers also use a front firing port, allowing them to be placed against a wall, if required. The R5 is suitable for all room environments due to it's ease of positioning.
Sound and set-up
The drive units in the Rega R5 have been designed with great care. The crossover needs no additional filter networks to compensate for drive unit problems. Unlike most manufacturers who boast about the complexity of their crossovers, Rega are proud of the simplicity of theirs. This simplicity means that bi-wiring will offer no advantage. Bi-amping will improve the performance of both mid/bass driver and tweeter units. For optimum results use two Rega Exon 3 power amplifiers.
Cabinet design
With emphasis on sound quality and dynamics the styling compliments rather than stands out. However, the design of the R5 is particularly radical and quite a departure from accepted norms. It’s sleek lines are subtle, it’s dimensions inoffensive and slim - it will stand modesty rather than make a bold statement upon a modern spatial environment.
Rega has worked hard on achieving a dynamic, stylish and most of all enjoyable loudspeaker.
