CD Recorders
May 27, 2010, 5:58 pm
What has happened to CD recorders? I've been wondering how easily to make quality recordings of radio broadcasts from my hifi tuner (I don't want to use the computer for this). Can anyone recommend a decent model I could look for, perhaps old stock or second-hand? I have a Rotel 02 series system s...Read more
Happy customer, but one small niggle
May 18, 2010, 4:06 pm
Hi, just wanted to say I love the system I bought from you - Denon AVR-2310 receiver and Tannoy Revolution DC6 speakers... the sound is beautiful. Also having fun with the various surround modes. I have one small niggle however with the receiver - when it's is switched on or I switch sources, by default it always selects STEREO output mode (the fr...Read more
Left channel dropping out!
May 4, 2010, 9:52 am
Hello everyone, First up, is there such a thing as a hi-fi forum?, hopefully in Australia. I have a problem of the hi-fi nature and if there is such a forum that any one knows of it would be much appreciated. I will let you all in on the problem anyway and maybe it will click with someone. New high-end amplifier, new Monster speaker cables, ol...Read more
Best solution for outdoor pool area?
March 6, 2010, 4:09 pm
I'm looking for some advice regarding an outdoor music solution for a new pool area. We're not sure whether we should opt for a radio with speakers such as the Tivoli radio, or outdoor speakers that are connected to a music system. It's quite a stretch from our existing stereo to the pool area, so not sure whether tonnes of cabling is an option a...Read more
Does colour influence the way you feel about a speaker?
February 18, 2010, 11:18 pm
There was a test done many years ago that was famous in the industry at the time. I think it may have been a Canadian speaker manufacturer that came up with the idea. It was pretty simple: all they wanted to do was test to see if colour had any effect on the way people felt about a speaker, and if it effected their perception of the sound. The idea...Read more
Valves or transistors - which do you prefer?
February 3, 2010, 1:26 pm
Valves used to be the bee's knees in audio glory days. They fell out of favour for a while, but like vinyl have come back with a vengeance. But is this just love of retro or the best way to listen to your music?...Read more
Using a DVD player to play CDs
February 3, 2010, 12:41 pm
In our opinion DVD players do not provide as good sound quality as a dedicated CD player when playing CDs. After all, DVD players are designed to process video. Also, the quality of the digital to analogue converters is generally not of the same standard as used in CD players. Plus, the build quality of sub $1000 DVD players is way less than perfe...Read more
Sound quality of digital radio
February 2, 2010, 11:11 pm
Digital radio is supposed to offer much better sound quality than analogue. However, we've found that for stations traditionally on the FM band, analogue sounds better. This is due to the large amounts of compression the stations are using to transmit their digital signal. How have others found the sound quality to be?...Read more
Why have turntables returned to favour?
February 2, 2010, 11:04 pm
Does anyone agree with Greg Borrowman, the editor of Australian Hi-Fi magazine? He thinks we're yearning for what was lost when analogue music yielded to digital. CDs have no personality; they're set and forget. With vinyl, it's ritual. You slide the LP out of its sleeve, then deftly remove it from the inner dust jacket, making sure not to touch ...Read more
